Music Video Survey

R&B Research

Contemporary R&B, also known as simply R&B, is a music genre that combines elements of rhythm and blues, fuck, pop, hip hop and dance.

 

Beyonce a well known R&B artists in her video 'Best Thing I Never Had' has the setting of a a dressing room. I don't think that R&B has a specific setting but it seems to be in private places not always known places. she continues the video to a wedding scene after walking around the scenery she tells the story of her wedding day while reminiscing about her previous relationship and how unhappy she was in contrast to her now.

in this music video 'work'  the artist  is in various different  locations but the main focus is on her throughout.  her costume and make suit the definition of a diva , R&B female artists tend to have  an outrageous outfit that can't be found elsewhere, although that can be any celebrity R&B have been known for their outfits on women. Iggy tell the story of how she's made it by working hard by actually displaying the different places she was in her life. while very shocking it is still admiring to see that she has made it so far from where she started. R&B videos are all about telling the story in videos and that's definitely what she's done.

Maria's Carey along with  Beyoncé have been  famous for a long period of time and  in one of her back in the day music videos "obsessed" is in what looks to be her many ion while all attention again is on her. we outfits are very revealing as she proceeds to sing about how obsessed  a certain person is as it says in the title.

In all these videos the similarities are the lack of clothes and the sexual behaviour. In media there is something called the male gaze and this is where the subject on camera typically a female behaves as if shes pleasing the eyes of the male viewers. This is what i see in these videos. There is a massive contradiction in what they are saying and what they are doing, the lyrics promote female power and independence but the respect that would have been given leaves when they dress and behave as they do.

Music Video Awards

Miley Cyrus has recently won the MTV best music video award for her video to Wrecking Ball.

There were mixed views on whether or not Miley should have received this award for this video. In my own personal opinion i think no. This is because she does not promote the correct behaviour or example to her fan-base, (before and after her transformation) Miley had a previous history of being a Disney channel children's show actress to her hit series Hannah Montana and has now been shown in recent news grinding on celebrities and performing half naked. For a woman with so much previous respect i don't think this new image suits her. 

Back to the original point of whether or not she should have received this award; the real question should be what makes a good music video and does she fit the criteria . what makes a good music video is:

• A good setting 
• Good costumes (does it match the mood/tone)
• Good lighting 
• Good Choreography (was it in sync)
• A variety of camera angles

If each category was assessed then her video would be good for an average music video but there is nothing that makes her a candidate for best music video. Miley has given into the male gaze theory and there is no question to whether or not her message was positive as i along with many other critics believe that her song had a strong message that was then tainted later by her inability to keep her clothes on. In the video there was no actually reason to why she wasn't wearing clothes apart from trying to please the male viewers. After reading many reviews on whether or not Miley should have received this award, I came to the final conclusion that Miley is clearly crying out for attention in this video and MTV has done nothing more than promote her behaviour. There was nothing that made Miley Cyrus stand out more than her nudity and if that is what the award is for, then surely many more celebrities will be removing their clothes for the fame which is not new but has ruined many young peoples view on success.

While making the Britney Spears music video i learnt the importance of editing. When recording all the footage it seemed like we had more than we needed and when editing we found out how much we actually needed. So we had to use what we had to create scenes that we dint manage to record before.

How did you attract/ address your audience?

How we managed to attract/address our audience was by having unique selling points (USP). We had quite a few unique selling points one was our film storyline, our pitch said we went back to the same park the murder happened in so it is literally a true story because of this it makes it almost seem as if it is lost footage found. True stories attract audiences as they relate to them more. Another USP was that our scary character was shown for a split second and it was a little girl, little children in horror films are always scary so this will draw in the horror film fanatic. Also because the age certificate is 15 it addresses the teenage audience and older. Often what happens is that if people see an age restriction they want to see what it is about the film that makes its only available to the older crowds, the curiosity will draw in a wider audience. If audiences follow certain horror films or have seen many they will start to decide that they like certain styles and types of actors; one more USP is that our film uses styles from different films such as Paranormal Activity and The Ring, with the use of different styles the audience will watch it and enjoy the unique way we have decided to portray our film.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? 

Looking back I think that I have learnt that sound is very important, and the music in the background 
actually makes a huge difference to how the audience feels towards what is happening. For example there could be a very scary scene on the screen but if it is in silence its not as scary as it would have been if we had used different music or sound effects to scare the audience more. in my preliminary task the video did not have sound on the clip so it relied completely on what was going on on the screen. Since then we have improved massively when it comes to the sound so much that there isn't a moment of complete silence. Also I have learnt that research is always being done when wanting to know about anything in our filming, if we want to know what is popular we have to research the most up to date information possible. When our Preliminary task was done we did no deep research so our ideas weren't developed they were just thought of between the group that we were in any way up to date they were what we could remember. I wouldn't say that we learnt something new about camera angles as we had a firm understanding of them when we did our Preliminary task although the Preliminary task gave us the necessary angles needed minimum in one scene. One main important factor that we managed to come across that we didn't tackle at the prelim task was time management and organisation of when to film, in the final task this was a problem as before we did the prelim in class so everyone was there and it was done effortlessly. However when it came to filming in our own time we had to keep rearranging as everyone had separate plans that kept interfering with our filming

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

While filming and editing we have used a range of different social websites to help produce our final film. 

I used Blogger to keep track of each step of my planning, filming and editing. I have blogged all of the the steps and information we have come across that needs to be recorded.

Final Cut Pro was a massive part of my process as we had to edit the film here and this took a majority of time and effort which payed if as we were able to publish our final version of our film with good feedback and clear editing techniques.

We used Google as our search engine for finding out any information or pictures apart from final cut pro this was used the most often for our whole project.

Prezi was used to present the information needed to show our class, We used Prezi when we starting to pitch our film idea to the rest of the class and the creative and colourful website allowed us to present our pitch in a very exciting way.

Youtube is where we posted our final cut of our films and where we searched for other examples of other film openings that might be helpful for our task.
